Garriott, Aaron Hudyma, Chesleigh Keene, and Dana Santiago have conducted a study known as, â€Å"Social Cognitive Predictors of First- and Non-First-Generation College Students’ Academic and Life Satisfaction.† The purpose of this study was to further explore Lent’s (2004) model which predicted college students’ life and academic satisfaction. In this chapter Gore talks about how fear takes over reason, reason challenges faith, and eventually faith defeats fear. The accusation that people are making is that he is incapable of leading our country because he is a Mormon. Some of the big issues on his plate currently involve women’s rights. As a Mormon, he does not believe in abortion and has made it clear that he would try to pass legislation that sets the beginning of life at conception. While there are certainly non-Mormon people who do not believe in abortion, this is being attributed to his religion. Fifty years ago, or even twenty-five to thirty years ago, this would have been a non-issue. Romney’s beliefs would have been more in line with the more conservative nature of the time period. Needless to say Mitt Romney faces an uphill battle on his quest for the White House. Given all of this information, it would seem very apparent that religion plays a huge role in presidential elections. This is true, but not necessarily in the way that one might think. Hawthornes Tales Essay Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote numerous stories about people who commit themselves to certain quests. This topic is prominent in several of his works, including My Kinsman, Major Molineux, Roger Malvins Burial, Young Goodman Brown, and The Ministers Black Veil. In each story, the protagonist character embarks on a particular quest, and in these stories, the characters are successful to different degrees, with some more successful than others. The success of the characters quests also depends on from what viewpoint they are observed. In My Kinsman, Major Molineux, the main character, Robin, goes on a quest to meet with his uncle, Major Molineux. Robins primary purpose was to meet with his kinsman, and perhaps be given the chance at obtaining access to power. Robins quest contains many stumbling points. He continually searches for his uncle, asking various people if they know of his whereabouts. He is constantly turned down, and sometimes even ridiculed. After many attempts, he is desperate to find answers. So far, his quest to possibly gain power has had no success whatsoever. He has not even found the man he is looking for, which is only the first step in his quest. Without finding Major Molineux, his quest has no purpose. Eventually, Robin realizes that his uncle is a hated man, and is being publicly ridiculed and embarrassed by everyone in the community. Robin finally realizes what the situation is, and joins the crowd in laughter at his uncle. He immediately wants to leave, and return home, but is encouraged by a friend to stay and continue his quest on his own. Robins original quest was extremely unsuccessful, but it may have created a new quest that is even better. Robin is faced with the challenge to continue on his own, and fend for himself. The gentlemen that Robin met says, if you continue to wish it , I will speed you on your journey. Or, if you prefer to remain with us, perhaps, as you are a shrewd youth, you may rise in the world, without the help of your kinsman, Major Molineux. (pg. 17). Robin is given the opportunity to move on and start a new quest, one that is even more challenging, but one that is much more rewarding as well. In Roger Malvins Burial, the type of quest that the main character goes on is quite different from that of Robin. Reuben Bournes quest begins in a very different way and under extremely different circumstances than did Robins. Reuben is in the middle of a battle in New England, and a fellow soldier, Roger Malvin, is injured, and cannot go on. Malvin spoke to Bourne, Reuben, my boy, this rock beneath which we site will serve for an old hunters gravestone I will no longer burden you with my useless body if you hasten onward alone, you may be preserved. (pg. ). After much emotion and talk, Reuben decides to carry on without Roger, but promises to give him a decent burial. Return to this wild rock, and lay my bones in the grave, and say a prayer over them, Malvin requested (pg. 22). Reuben intended to tell Malvins family about what had happened, but was ashamed to break the news. Unlike Robin in My Kinsman, Major Molineux, Reuben does not want to go on his quest. He lives with the shame and indignity throughout his whole life, but never actually makes the commitment to return to the site of Malvins death. He cannot overlook the fact that he left the man to die and never returned, nor can he confess that he was wrong in his actions. He finally destroys his guilt by killing his own son, as they stumbled onto the site where Malvin died in the forest. This is a shocking turn of events. Nonetheless, Reubens overall quest can still be considered a success to some extent. His quest was to come back and bury, and pay respects to Roger Malvin. In Young Goodman Brown, Goodman Browns quest is extremely different from the other quests previously observed. Here, the character goes on a spiritual and psychological quest, exploring the world of evil outside of his ordinary life. He has lost faith in everything he had previously had faith in! He decides to go on a quest, in which he ends up at a meeting where he sees everyone from his community performing satanic acts. He judges all of these people for being devil worshipers, even though he is on the same journey. As a result of his quest, he begins to distrust everyone in the community, including his wife, Faith. This distrust stays with him for his entire life and forever haunts him. In contrast to the other characters in the other stories, Goodman Brown succeeds in his quest. He desires to learn of the world of evil and his quest takes him there. However, his quest takes him one step further by permanently changing his view of others. His perception is altered, and now he only sees the evil in people, and cannot trust anyone. A stern, a sad, a darkly meditative, a distrustful, if not a desperate, man did he become from the night of that fearful dream. (pg. 75). Goodman Browns life had been changed completely as a result of his quest. In The Ministers Black Veil, the character achieves the most success of all. In the story, he is adamant about wearing the black veil over his face. Mr. Hooper wears the veil during a mass, in order to hide his face to symbolize that everyone in fact wears an invisible veil to hide their sins. He desires to wear it the rest of his life, and this makes his followers, turn away from him. He was rejected by much of the community, but he was willing to put forth everything he had for his cause. He continued to wear the veil all the way through death, in which he was given the option to remove it, but refused. Before he died, he finally made public his purpose for wearing the veil. When man loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his sin; then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I have lived, and die! I look around me, and, lo! on every visage a Black Veil! pg. 107). Unlike the other protagonists, Hooper is fully successful in his quest. He pursued his cause, and was willing to give everything for it, even though in meant everybody would reject him. He never gave up, even when on his deathbed. He pushed his cause to the very end, and because of that, he was successful. In many of Hawthornes tales, the main character goes on a quest. In some of the quests, such as My Kinsman, Major Molineux and Roger Malvins Burial, the protagonist failed in the original quest, but was given the opportunity to succeed in another. The adjuvant effect of pertussis toxin on the human body results in lymphocytosis and hypoglycemia within 3 hours in the ciliated epithelial cells and also causes ciliostasis. The adenylate cyclase toxin and tracheal cytotoxin combine with pertussis toxin to cause ciliostasis. The same toxins inhibit the phagocytic activities of the host. The phagocytic activities include chemotaxis, engulfment, the oxidative burst, and bactericidal killing. The adenylate cyclase is a hemolysin that causes lysis of the red blood cells. The tracheal cytotoxin stops the beating mechanism of the ciliated cells. This toxin then kills the ciliated cells and extrudes it from the mucosa. It also stimulates the release of the Interleukin – I, thus causing fever. The first stage symptoms of pertussis are a cough, low –grade fever, running nose, sneezing, etc. After 7 – 10 days, the nasal discharge gets thickened and the cough also gets severe. This leads to severe upper respiratory congestion in infants. This is the second stage. It lasts for 1-2 weeks. The third stage is the more complicated stage. The coughing increases very heavily that the child will cough more than 5 times during a single respiration and have a sudden intake of air, causing a whooping sound. The sound is caused due to the narrowed glottis. At this stage vomiting, weight loss, tongue protruding, eyes bulging are most common. Salvador Dali, Dadaism and Surrealism Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings The human mind is a very controlling device and organ. However it is not perfect in the way it processes things. Illusions for instance are visual stimuli that swindle the brain because the brain cannot process all visual imagery accurately. Why do we see puddles form up on the road whilst driving on a hot day? Why do certain parts of a drawing look bigger while in actually fact they are smaller? There have been numerous artists that have used illusions in their works, Scott Kim, M.C Escher, but what really brought fame to the surrealists in the 1990s? The Spanish painter Salvador Dali. A small amount has had such an impact on society as the eccentric painter whose paintings obsessed audiences for many years. Dali was immensely popular in the art community for his originality in work, and several of his paintings now stand as icons for his era. Dali was admired by the public because he embraced innovative ideas of the time, many of which were integrated into his works as well as his life. He continued to implement new ideas as times changed, which allowed him to keep his popularity within the public and art enthusiasts, possibly making him one of the most distinguished artists of the 1990s. Salvador Dali (Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech) born in May 1904, in a minute town of figueres, in a region known as Catalonia. His parents gave him a lot of support as a young child, his first studio built for him at a very young age. Dali knowing that his parents recognised his potential from very early on gave him full support, until he reached the San Fernando Academy of fine arts in Madrid. Nevertheless, he related to these problems, and his paintings gave him an opening in such ways that allowed him to express his feelings to a great extent, this also gave the public a viewing insight into his work, by examining his paintings we could also relate to them and see for ourselves how his paranoia overwhelmed him. Paranoiac-Critical In relation to this Dalis paranoia, a psychological method known as paranoiac-critical was created. The Paranoiac-Critical Method was developed by Dali as a way for him to dig out his internal emotions. It was an approach for artists to work throughout their obsessions by ultimately selecting and organizing meticulous objects on the canvas. Dali explained his paranoiac critical as a Spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based on critical and systematic  objectivities of delirious associations and interpretations. When combining a method into a piece of work, usually a functional process of the brain is used to visualise imagery in the work, to combine these into the finished creation. Dali often used double imagery and multiple imagery, which then resulted into unclear images allowing them to be interpreted in different ways. Two good examples of Dalis paranoiac- critical method and double imagery is the The invisible Man and Slave Market with the Disappearing Bust of  Voltaire, for both of these paintings he has cleary used double imagery to trick the eye into thinking there is only one solid image but infact multiple images are present. Disappearing Bust of Voltaire the Invisible Man I see the paranoiac- critical method as being effortless, in my opinion Dali is fooling himself into going insane, while remembering the cause for madness is actually to create a work of art. Dali chose the difficult way by truly going crazy, rather than motivating madness through chemical means. As one of his quotes say, I dont take drugs. I am drugs, Andre Breton poems of Andre Surrealism was an artistic and literary faction that began in 1922 led by the French poet/ critic Andre Breton. Breton was the originator and primary theoretician of Surrealism, and artist association Committed to examining the unfounded, paranormal and intuitive aspects of the human mind. Surrealism sought to reinstate conventional moral and ethical concepts with beliefs of anger, hatred, etc, expressing emotions exaggeratedly that Breton described as exalting the values of poetry, love, and liberty. The surrealists attempted to bypass conscious determination and allow their unconscious take over their works. To explore the subconscious mind, to go beyond the typical thinking person. Dadaism and Surrealism Dada was a movement approximately around the same time as the first world. Dadaism was like a dispute against war, but not war but art. It was an anti- art. Dadaism felt as though the public no longer deserved the privilege of beautiful art that they had become so adapted to because of how the war came upon them, the feeling that people lost their well being and value. So Dadaism intentions were to make art unsightly, ugly. Surrealism emerged from what was still left of Dada (a European society characterized through its so called absurdity and lack of traditional standards, sometimes referred to as (nihilistic) a life without objectives or values. During the early years of the mid 1920s and not like Dada, Surrealism alleged a capable and more positive outlook of art and from the outcome of this it went on to win several converts. Surrealism got its early era as a literary, not artistic, movement in French publications. One thing that Surrealism and Dadaism had in common was their fai th in the understanding of the unconscious mind and also its manifestations, together they understood that throughout the unconscious mind an overabundance of artistic imagery would be unveiled. Together both called automatism. A good example of Dadaism is Marcel Duchamps three dimensional piece The Fountain its not what you would describe as a great piece of art. The Fountain is what Duchamp would call a readymade. This piece is essentially a urinal with the word MUTT printed on it. I think this shows an ideal example of Dada for three reasons: to begin with it is in no way like art before, secondly the resources used are not what you would describe as standard art materials and thirdly this piece makes no sense what so ever. There is an obvious variation between this and Salvador Dalis Persistance Of Memory, in what i would describe as Duchamp slapping this piece together , on the other hand Dali has carefully painted in vast detail his thoughts, his mental image. This painting by Dali is what he would portray as hand- painted dream photographs - reuniting the unconscious mind with realism, reality.
